M-DCPS EDUCATOR RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THREE 2010 DISTINGUISHED EDUCATORS IN THE VISUAL, LITERARY AND PERFORMING ARTS

MIAMI – Design and Architecture Senior High School (DASH) teacher Ellen Abramson was recently recognized as one of three 2010 Distinguished Educators in the Visual, Literary and Performing Arts by YoungArts.  Abramson has been an art educator for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system since 1989.  She is presently teaching Advanced Placement Studio Art at DASH.

The winners were chosen by a selection panel who considered a group of approximately 80 nominated teachers, designated by the YoungArts class of 2010 Gold and Silver winners.  Abramson will receive a $1,000 honorarium and a formal plaque certifying her accomplishment.  Abramson is a working artist who shares her love of art and process with her students.  Her philosophy of teaching is based on the idea that “diversity brings unity.”  Her classroom has become a place where a diverse population of talented, young people come together to study the visual language of art, and, while expressing themselves in this common language, learn to appreciate their differences.

YoungArts is the core program of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.  This award is offered to highlight the considerable contribution each of these educators has made in advancing the careers of talented young artists in the visual, literary and performing arts.
