M-DCPS THIRD GRADERS SHOW STEADY PROGRESS ON FCAT READING, MATH

MIAMI – Third graders in Miami-Dade County Public Schools showed continued progress on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), according to information released by the Florida Department of Education today.  The District posted increases of 3 points in Reading and 2 points in Mathematics.

“We are proud of all the positive results our schools have shown,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho.  “But we are especially proud of our low-performing schools that made progress in spite of such challenges as poverty, language differences, and disabilities.  This is the direct result of a concerted effort by teachers, administrators, volunteers, parents, and students.”

The most dramatic results occurred in Miami-Dade’s lowest-performing schools, those designated F in 2009.  Each of the elementary schools designated F last year showed considerable progress in this year’s FCAT in both Reading and Mathematics.

The District is currently working to verify school-by-school information and will provide that information to the public as it becomes available.
