M-DCPS’ SCHOOLS WIN AWARDS AT TITLE I’S DISTRICT CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

Over 1,400 people, including some 850 students from 78 schools, attended the 2010 Florida Scholastic chess League South Regional competition held at Booker T. Washington Senior High School recently.

Three schools were crowned regional state champions:  Rockway Middle School won in the K-8 category, and Southwest Miami and Miami senior high schools were co-champions in the K-12 category.

School Teams also received awards in five separate grade categories:

Grades K-1 Riverside Elementary – 1st Place
                        Melrose Elementary – 2nd Place
                        Olympia Heights Elementary – 3rd Place

Grades 2-3    Norwood Elementary – 1st Place
                        Riverside Elementary – 2nd Place
                        South Miami Heights Elementary – 3rd Place

Grades 4-5 - Riverside Elementary – 1st Place
                        Olympia Heights Elementary – 2nd Place
                        Norwood Elementary – 3rd Place
                       
Grades 6-8    Rockway Middle – 1st Place
                        Hialeah Gardens Middle – 2nd Place
                        John F. Kennedy Middle – 3rd Place

Grades 9-12 Miami Senior High – 1st Place
                        Miami Beach Senior High – 2nd Place
                        North Miami Senior High – 3rd Place

Special guests at the tournament included Women’s World Chess Grandmaster Alexandra Kosteniuk, World-record-holding solo pilot, Capt. Barrington Irving, Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho and School Board Members, Dr. Marta Pérez and Dr. Wilbert “Tee” Holloway.
