MIAMI-DADE THIRD GRADERS PROGRESSING FASTER THAN MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) third-grade students surpassed or matched every large district in the state on gains posted in the percentages scoring high in both Reading and Mathematics in this year’s Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), according to statistics released today by the Florida Department of Education. Additionally, M-DCPS third graders’ level of growth in both Reading and Mathematics exceeded that of the state. “This is a compelling story of a school district moving in the right direction,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “Our students, teachers, parents, administrators and volunteers stepped up to the plate and scored a homerun.” In Mathematics, the percentage of M-DCPS third graders scoring at Levels 3 or above increased by two points from 2009 to 2010, while the state remained the same. This is the first time that M-DCPS third graders’ performance has matched the state. In Reading, M-DCPS third graders posted larger increases in the percentage scoring at Levels 3 and above, and larger decreases in the percentage scoring in Level 1. The percentage of M-DCPS third graders scoring at Levels 3 or above in Reading increased by three points from 2009 to 2010, while the state increased by only one point. Additionally, M-DCPS reduced the percentage of Grade 3 students scoring in Level 1 in Reading by two points, while the state only posted a decrease of one point.
