M-DCPS’ INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY WINS

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Information Technology Services is one of 100 worldwide organizations, including JetBlue Airways, Motorola, Proctor & Gamble and AT&T that have been honored by CIO magazine for exemplifying the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology (IT).  The 2010 CIO 100 awards will be presented in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., on August 24.

The District virtualized its IT infrastructure using VMware technology. The department created 702 virtual machines to deliver every application, including payroll and grade reporting.

M-DCPS is the only school system in the country running its entire infrastructure on virtual machines. The school district has saved more than $2.5 million in three years and reduced energy costs by $1.5 million.

To be considered for the 23rd annual CIO 100 Awards, organizations were required to fill out an online application. A team of 40 judges then reviewed the applications and debated their merits, then voted on the final 100.
