M-DCPS STUDENT LEADS PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
DURING JULY 4 NATURALIZATION CEREMONY

Carlos Beltrán, a student at Hialeah High Adult Center, was chosen to lead the Pledge of Allegiance during a Naturalization ceremony July 4th in Milander Park in Hialeah.  Eighty-five people were sworn in as new citizens as part of Independence Day celebrations.

“I am proud for the opportunity to represent the rest of the new citizens in this special day.” said Beltrán. “I am very thankful to Miami-Dade County Public Schools Adult Education Program for the preparation available to people who want to be citizens of this great country.”

Beltrán arrived in the U.S. ten years ago from Colombia looking for freedom after threats were made on his life.  Beltran’s daughter was born here and in order to fulfill his dream of becoming a citizen, he registered last year in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools(M-DCPS) Adult Education Program at Hialeah Adult Center.  Beltrán plans to continue at the same center to master the English language.

M-DCPS’ Adult Education Program serves approximately 107,000 students annually.  That number represents about 21 percent of all students registered in all school districts in Florida. The students that participate in the Adult Education Program receive preparation in more than 60 vocational training careers, adult basic education, GED diploma classes, high school completion, English as a Second Language and citizenship.  Many of these classes are offered for free.
