MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES SUPERINTENDENT CARVALHO’S REORGANIZATION PLAN, SAVING $8 MILLION MIAMI - At its June 14, 2010 meeting, the Miami-Dade County School Board approved a reorganization plan proposed by Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho that will save the school district $8 million. The plan is structured to protect teachers’ jobs and to preserve arts and music education, while maintaining the financial viability of the school district. Under the reorganization, more than 200 central and regional office employees will be deployed to teach in District schools, in order to help meet Class Size Amendment requirements. The individuals being deployed will result in a re-distribution of funding to schools of up to $12 million. In addition, a continued downsizing of the capital-funded workforce will be realized in accordance with reduced revenues, and school facilities staff will be leveraged to provide essential maintenance to schools and complete capital projects in progress. The reorganization reduces 65 central administration positions, including four assistant superintendents, 14 project managers in Facilities, and 29 positions in Curriculum and Instruction. The District has made more than $400 million in reductions since 2008, when Carvalho became Superintendent. Additionally, District reserves have been built up from nearly nothing to more than $70 million, a factor that contributed substantially to an improved Moody’s rating from a negative to stable outlook. The plan also establishes a state-required cabinet level position to support persistently low-performing schools as designated by the State’s school improvement policy. Mr. Nikolai P. Vitti, Deputy Chancellor, Florida Department of Education (FLDOE), will return to the District, along with key staff, to serve as Assistant Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction, School Improvement and Accountability, Education Transformation and Performance. Ms. Marie L. Izquierdo, Regional Executive Director, FLDOE, will also return to the District to serve as Administrative Director, Business Services, School Operations. # # # 10-JS/206/GC/TS |
