MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL GRADUATE NAMED AN INAUGURAL WINNER OF PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

MIAMI- Leangelo Hall, a 2010 graduate of Coral Reef Senior High School, is a recipient of the inaugural ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarship.

The scholarships are awarded annually by the Council of the Great City Schools to four minority students, two African American and two Hispanic students, attending one of the largest urban school districts across the nation. Each scholarship is valued at $5,000. The scholarships encourage an interest and pursuit of technology-related degrees. Four hundred applicants vied for the coveted scholarships. The recipients were selected based on their academic achievement as well as their leadership and civic aspirations.

Leangelo was accepted to Princeton University, where he plans to study pediatric neurosurgery. He served as captain of the tennis team at Coral Reef Senior High School. In addition, Leangelo tutored elementary school students and participated in various fund-raising efforts in his community.

The Council of the Great City Schools is a one-of-a-kind national organization, which represents the needs of urban public schools. Comprised of 65 large city school districts, the organization promotes urban schools and advocates for inner-city students through media relations, research and legislation.

The scholarship winners will be recognized at the Council’s 54th Annual Fall Conference, October 20-24, in Tampa.
