MIAMI-DADE SCHOOLS WELCOME STUDENTS BACK TO SCHOOL
FOR THE 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) opened its doors to more than 342,000 students today, marking a very productive, learning-filled opening day for the 2010-2011 academic year.  Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho began the morning riding a school bus with students to Phyllis Ruth Miller Elementary School.

Brand new this year is the District’s highly anticipated iPrep Academy. Billed as a school for the new millennium, iPrep is located in Miami’s business, cultural, and economic hub with classrooms in the District’s downtown administrative building. The magnet school offers students access to high-end technology, and honors and advance placement courses with dynamic instruction focusing on leadership and problem-solving skills.

“iPrep is just the beginning,” said Carvalho. “We are giving our students a 21st century education with skills that will make them marketable for careers in high demand fields.”

The District also opened two more magnet schools, International Studies Preparatory Gables in Coral Gables and Medical Academy for Science and Technology (M.A.S.T.) @ Homestead.  Applications are now being accepted for these magnet programs at www.dadeschools.net.

In the afternoon, Superintendent Carvalho participated in a backpack distribution event at Redland Elementary School sponsored by Discovery Communications. Students received brand new backpacks full of school supplies, including a 3-ring binder; a 24-pack of crayons; a box of tissue, a set of dividers; a 12-pack of pencils; an eraser, and a glue stick.

“Discovery has been a tremendous partner with the school district,” said Carvalho. “It is partnerships like this that provide the kind of resources our children need to soar academically.”
Superintendent Carvalho visited several schools around the county including, the District’s Primary Learning Center, Phyllis Ruth Miller Elementary, Brownsville Middle, Howard Doolin Middle, and Carol City Senior High.

“This has been a tremendously successful first day back to school,” said Carvalho. “Thanks to the hard work and professionalism of every employee, our students and parents experienced a very smooth first day. We have the best at Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and today they demonstrated it.”
