FIRST-EVER DISTRICT DATA LEADER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Five superintendents recognized as state’s top data leaders by Florida Department of Education

MIAMI – The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) has named Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho one of five finalists for the first-ever District Data Leader of the Year Award program.  The five superintendent finalists were recognized September 15, during the Florida Association of District School Superintendents Fall Leadership Conference for their exemplary leadership in using data to increase student achievement in their districts. The winning superintendent will be named October 19, in Tallahassee.

Supt. Carvalho was recognized for implementing a Data Assessment & Technical Assistance/Coordination of Management (DATA/COM) process that monitors the immediate operational needs of the district’s most struggling schools, and deploys resources to deal with critical issues in an efficient and timely manner.
The other superintendent finalists include:  Bill Husfelt, from Bay County, Tom Townsend of Putnam County, Michael Lannon of St. Lucie County, and MaryEllen Elia of Hillsborough County.

A selection committee will interview the finalists and choose the school superintendent who best employs innovative data research strategies, researches new methods and opportunities to improve the use of data, and builds partnerships within the community to bolster support and use of data systems.

The FLDOE, in partnership with Microsoft, launched the program this year to highlight the critical role district leaders play in supporting and encouraging the use of data, and in communicating data’s relevance to teachers, administrators, parents, students and other education stakeholders.
