MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECEIVES $1.2 MILLION USDOE
ARTS IN EDUCATION GRANT AWARD
MIAMI - Miami-Dade County Public Schools was recently awarded a four-year, $1.2 million grant from the United States Department of Education (USDOE) for funding under the Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination (AEMDD) Program. The purpose of this program is to develop, document, evaluate, and disseminate an effective and replicable standards-based, arts-integration program that improves elementary student achievement.
The project, HeARTS & Minds, will be implemented at Robert Russa Moton Elementary School, a pre-K through 5th grade school located in West Perrine. The project design contains five fundamental components: standards-based, arts-integrated curricula that incorporate object-based and project-based learning strategies; collaborative planning and teaching between classroom teachers, the four arts specialists (dance, music, theatre, visual arts) at the school, and visiting artists; literature as a springboard for arts-integrated units of study; extended learning experiences to cultural institutions, performances, and literary venues, and ongoing professional development in arts-integration with artists and experts in the field.
Currently an audition-based, studio arts magnet program for selected students, R. R. Moton will convert to a school-wide, arts-integrated program for all students to participate. Interested students who reside outside the school’s attendance boundary will need to apply. Applications will be accepted October 1st through January 15th and may be obtained at R. R. Moton Elementary School, 18050 Homestead Avenue, Miami, Florida 33157, online at www.miamimagnets.org, or by contacting the School Choice & Parental Options office at 305-995-1922.
