SHENANDOAH MIDDLE MUSEUMS MAGNET SCHOOL
FEATURED IN COOPER-HEWITT’S NATIONAL DESIGN JOURNAL

The Museums Magnet Program at Shenandoah Middle School was recently featured in the fall 2010 issue of the National Design Journal, published by the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.  The prestigious journal focuses on the impact of design on daily life through active educational and curatorial programming.

Shenandoah Middle School was featured after two teachers participated in Cooper-Hewitt’s award winning City of Neighborhoods educational program in San Antonio, Texas.  The teachers developed lessons for Cooper-Hewitt’s Educational Resource Center and Cooper-Hewitt staff visited the school.

Teachers applied the design methodologies learned by creating an environment that reinforced object- and project-based learning strategies.  These strategies, already being implemented in their classrooms, emphasize problem-solving, communication, exploration, invention, and inquiry.  The design strategies learned at Cooper-Hewitt gave them an additional perspective that further connects students to the learning process. The relationship between Shenandoah Middle School and Cooper-Hewitt will continue to provide superlative experiences for a unique school with a museum-like environment and teaching excellence that engages students.

Shenandoah Middle School’s community partnersinclude Dade Heritage Trust, Historical Museum of Southern Florida, Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami, Miami Art Museum, Museum of Science, The Wolfsonian-FIU, and the Coral Gables Museum.
