STUDENTS IN GOLEMAN SENIOR’S ACADEMY OF FINANCE TO RUN SPECIAL ‘SWAMP’ BRANCH OF SOUTH FLORIDA’S EDUCATIONAL CREDIT UNION

Students enrolled in Barbara Goleman Senior High School’s National Academy Foundation Finance program will be experiencing a first tomorrow – applying what they have learned in class, in a real business at the school.  They will operate the SWAMP Credit Union, a branch of the South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union (SFEFCU), to provide services to students and staff. The school is located at 14100 N.W. 89th Avenue, Miami Lakes, FL 33018.

The SFEFCU is headquartered in Miami-Dade County and serves educators, students and the families of Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Miami Dade College.

The program is designed to provide critical life-skills training in financial literacy, develop career awareness and work-readiness skills, and positively influence student academic achievement. The branch will be staffed by students and is designed to serve the financial needs of the school's staff and student body.  The benefits of this program are two-fold; students become financially educated, and gain real-world work experience.

The SWAMP Credit Union will be open for business on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:40 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  The banking students, under the supervision of a SFEFCU representative, will be able to make deposits and withdrawals, open savings and checking accounts, issue AMEX gift cards and movie tickets, and answer financially related questions.
