FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA VISITS RIVERSIDE ELEMENTARY MIAMI – First lady Michelle Obama visited Riverside Elementary School yesterday to launch the Let’s Move! salad bar initiative. The initiative will place salad bars in 6,000 schools across the nation. Riverside Elementary received the first salad bar of the campaign. The First Lady discussed healthy eating choices with the students and was joined by local celebrity chefs and district Chef Partners Kris Wessel, Michelle Bernstein, Michael Schwartz, Frank Jeannetti and Ken Lyon. Children also learned how to make a healthy salad. The salad bar initiative supports Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign, which combats childhood obesity through promoting healthy eating and physical activity. “Miami-Dade is really at the forefront of healthy eating and wellness policies,” said Director of Food and Nutrition Penny Parham. “It’s not everywhere that health, nutrition and physical activity are a priority.” Miami-Dade County Public Schools has a long history of combating childhood obesity. The school district removed soda and high caloric and sugary snacks from vending machines five years ago as well as offering healthier food choices in the cafeterias.
