MIAMI – Five Miami-Dade schools are among eight being recognized by the Florida Department of Education as Florida Title I Distinguished Schools for 2009-2010. Florida has 1,801 Title I schools.

The schools are Mater Academy East Charter, Ernest R Graham Elementary, Twin Lakes Elementary, Mater Academy and Seminole Elementary

The first four schools are being recognized for being Title I schools for the last five years, making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the last five years, having a school grade of “A” for the last three years, having a school in need of improvement (SINI) status of zero for 2010-2011, and having a free and reduced-price lunch (FRPL) of 78 to 87 percent.

Seminole Elementary was selected for closing the achievement gap in reading and mathematics for FRLP students and English Language Learners by a total point increase of 23 between the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years.

The Florida Title I Distinguished Schools award recognizes Title I schools that have made the greatest progress in sustaining high levels of academic achievement and for closing the achievement gap for students in the No Child Left Behind subgroups.
