M-DCPS’ 2010 ANGEL TREE PROGRAM GROWING STRONG

What started out eight years ago as a lunchtime idea of one Miami-Dade Schools department  – to create a special Christmas for 50 homeless teens at one school, has grown into the District’s Angel Tree program encompassing over 800 students at 26 schools.

The brainchild of the staff of Capital Construction Budgets & Controls, Angel Tree is unique because it is not a toy drive.  Participants receive the name, age and school name of a child they wish to “adopt” and then go shopping especially for their “angel.” They are able to write a note to the child if they wish, and are asked to sign the gift tags. Gifts may be dropped off wrapped or unwrapped at the Capital Construction office, which will deliver them to the participating schools.

According to Isora Castro, District Director of Capital Construction, the District has over 190 elementary schools with children who may not receive a Christmas present. However, she hopes to keep the momentum going.

“Our ultimate goal is to reach every child in need at every one of our elementary schools,” Castro said. “All we want for Christmas is to have a toy for our angels.”

This year’s Angel Tree program ends Monday, Dec. 13.  Anyone wishing to adopt a student should contact Rusty Ball at 305-995-4508 or via email at Rball2@dadeschools.net; or Rena Ragin at 305-995-4880 or via email at RaginR@dadeschools.net.  The gifts are being collected at Room P103 in the former Jefferson parking garage, 155 N.E. 15th Street, across from the School Board Administration Building.
