HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMANCE GRADES RELEASED, IMPRESSIVE GAINS FOR MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS (M-DCPS) MIAMI –Miami-Dade’s public high schools made impressive overall gains on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), leading to notable jumps in high school performance grades, according to data released by the Florida Department of Education. The most significant gains came from Miami Edison and Miami Central senior high schools. Multiple “F” schools for several years, Edison and Central earned school performance grades of “C.” This is the highest grade the schools have received since the inception of the School Performance Grades program more than ten years ago. “These outstanding results were a labor of love by an army of people,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “It’s quite an accomplishment for schools that two years ago faced sanctions, or even closure, by the State. The teachers, administration, parents, and community of Edison and Central came together in a dynamic way for our students’ benefit, they have great reason to celebrate.” In other results, one-third of the District’s 64 high schools that received a School Performance Grade earned a grade of “A.” In Miami-Dade County 34 percent of high schools received an “A”; state-wide, only 30 percent received that grade. More than half of M-DCPS’ senior high schools – 59 percent – received either an “A” or “B.” Additionally, nine of the District’s ten Differentiated Accountability (DA) schools, including Miami Edison, improved or maintained their high school grades in 2010 from 2009. Miami Central, Miami Jackson, Miami Northwestern, and Miami Southridge senior high schools improved their performance grades, while Homestead, Miami Carol City, Miami Norland, and North Miami senior high schools maintained their grades. “The methodology for grading high schools changed this year, and our school district responded,” said Carvalho. “These results are a direct reflection of our efforts to better prepare students for post-secondary education and the world of work.” # # # 10-JS/305/TR |
