MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES REACH TENTATIVE AGREEMENT MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) and American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Local 1184 reached a tentative agreement today that will provide a one percent salary increase for employees of the bargaining unit which include bus drivers, custodians, maintenance, and cafeteria workers. Ten- and twelve-month employees will receive a One-Time Award salary increase equal to one percent of the employee’s base salary. At Wednesday's School Board meeting, Superintendent Carvalho spoke of the many times he has been approached by AFSCME employees who asked him to protect their jobs and healthcare. "You have made the right decisions for your union members," Carvalho said, congratulating AFSCME President Sherman Henry. The agreement must be approved by the School Board at its next meeting on January 12, 2011 provided AFSCME members ratify it prior to that date. The tentative agreement represents a total compensation package inclusive of health insurance, which retains a free health insurance option for employees.
