MIAMI-DADE SCHOOL BOARD EXTENDS SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO M. CARVALHO’S CONTRACT The Miami-Dade School Board today voted unanimously to extend Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho’s contract by two years. "It has been my pleasure to discharge my duties in this greatest of communities," Carvalho said. "We do it for one simple and very important reason--the kids. I will continue to orient my work with the same degree of honor as all of those in our extended school family, and I will continue to do it in a transparent way as does this honorable Board, with values and principles." Carvalho’s administration has returned the Miami-Dade school district to financial solvency, restructured its business functions, improved student achievement, and brought forth innovations and efficiencies that promise continued success. Many community leaders spoke in favor of the extension including Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Pepe Diaz, City of Miami Commissioner Richard P. Dunn, Florida Department of Education Vice Chair Robert Martinez, Senator Rudy Garcia, Florida International University President Mark Rosenberg, Gibraltar Private Bank & Trust Company President and Chief Operating Officer Adolfo Henriques, United Way President/CEO Harve Mogul, and UTD President Karen Aronowitz, among others. School Board Member Carlos L. Curbelo proposed the contract extension, citing the paramount importance of maintaining the District’s leadership in order to continue the delivery of high quality, innovative educational opportunities for all students. With the approved extension, Carvalho’s contract will be in place until 2015.
