M-DCPS TEACHER SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN PEPSI INITIATIVE

MIAMI- Elina S. Torres, a teacher at Pinecrest Elementary School, was selected to participate in a Pepsi initiative titled, YO SUMO (I Count) as part of the documentary Latinos Living the American Dream, which was produced and directed by Eva Longoria.  The documentary highlights the accomplishments and impact that Hispanics have made in shaping the landscape of the United States. The feature is a culmination of Pepsi’s YO SUMO (I Count) movement, which encourages Latinos to go beyond being counted and show how they contribute to America.

“Elina Torres is a dedicated teacher who works closely with parents and our school community” said Marisol Diaz, Principal at Pinecrest.  “for the betterment of all of her students.”

Torres runs a store called Cristi’s Closet and sales from the secondhand store benefit the Children’s Bereavement Center.  This center offers support to families who have lost children and siblings. Cristi’s Closet is named after Elina’s daughter, who died at 16 in a fatal traffic accident.

Visit www.pepsiyosumo.com for more information on the YO SUMO initiative.
