MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO HOST SPECTACULAR
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS EXPO, JAN. 22

Breaking news in education! A group of more than 2,000 participants comprised of students, parents, teachers, industry and university partners are expected to attend the annual Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Expo on Saturday, January 22, beginning at 8:45 a.m.  This showcase of competitions will be held in the Science Complex of Miami Dade College’s North Campus, 11380 N.W. 27th Avenue, Miami, FL  33167.

This year’s Expo will be larger than ever since it will encompass three fairs: the Elementary, the Regional, and the SECME fair competitions.  Elementary and secondary schools have registered to enter the District Science Fairs and 10 SECME Olympiad & Festival events.  These events highlights elementary, middle, and senior high school students engaged in engineering, mathematics, and science challenges in a positive, competitive environment of sportsmanship. The projects help open the doors to college scholarships and advanced academic studies as well as showcase the students’ vision and promote the understanding and appreciation of science and the vital role it plays in humanity.

Science fair categories include behavioral & social sciences, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, microbiology, zoology, earth & planetary science, environmental science, physics, astronomy, and medicine and health.

SECME student teams will test basswood bridges for structural efficiency. Containers will be engineered to safely hold the contents of a raw egg that will be hoisted and dropped from up to 50 feet. Cars powered solely by the spring from a mousetrap will race across the gymnasium floor and water‑bottle rockets will be launched into the air with the anticipation of maintaining the maximum hang time. Essays and banners communicating student interpretations of this year’s theme, SECME: STEMulating Minds, will be displayed and judged.

Students receive certificates, medals, trophies and cash prizes as rewards.
