SEVEN FINALISTS VIE FOR MIAMI-DADE'S
TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the United Teachers of Dade will host the 2012 Francisco R. Walker Teacher of the Year recognition dinner to name the most outstanding teacher throughout the District on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 7 p.m. in the Doral Golf Resort & Spa’s Grand Ballroom.  The resort is located at 4400 N.W. 87th Ave., Doral.

The seven finalists, the areas they represent and their schools are listed as follows:

  • Region I - Neyda A. Borges, Miami Lakes Educational Center

  • Region II - Lissette Marie Reigosa, W. J. Bryan Elementary

  • Region III - Barbara Leah Quinaz, Miami Senior High

  • Region IV - Agustin Grana, Southwest Miami Senior High

  • Region V - David Menasche, Coral Reef Senior High

  • Education Transformation Office (ETO) - Robert J. Baglos, North Miami Senior High

  • Alternative - Dr. Barrett E. Mincey, Educational Alternative Outreach Program

The event is underwritten by CTB/McGraw-Hill, Pearson and South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union, and co-sponsored by Univision 23/Telefutura 69, Fox-Mar Photography and Miami-Dade County Council of PTAs/PTSAs. Kendall Toyota will present the winner with the keys to a new car.

The District and United Teachers of Dade also will recognize the 2011 Rookie Teacher of the Year finalists, and announce the winner at the event.  The finalists are listed as follows:

  • Region I - Janet Blanco-Soto, Spanish Lake Elementary

  • Region II - Brittany M. Middlebrooks, Thomas Jefferson Middle

  • Region III - Matias Ricardo Manzano, Jose De Diego Middle

  • Region IV - Christopher Anthony Illa, Felix Varela Senior High

  • Region V - Jasmine L. Brown, Caribbean Elementary

  • ETO – Lauren K. Harshbarger, Dr. Henry W. Mack/West Little River Elementary

  • Alternative - Caroline Raffington, YWAACD at J.R.E. Lee Opportunity
