TWO MIAMI-DADE HIGH SCHOOLS CHOSEN AS DISTINGUISHED ACADEMIES
BY THE NATIONAL ACADEMY FOUNDATION

Two Miami-Dade County public high schools are among seven National Academy Foundation (NAF) academies from across the nation that have been designated as Distinguished Academies.  The schools, Miami Springs High School’s Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, and Southwest Miami High’s Academy of Banking and Finance, will be recognized at NAF’s annual meeting on July 17-19 in San Francisco.

Miami Springs’ Academy of Hospitality & Tourism was established in 1987 to expose students to the wide variety of opportunities and career paths in one of the world’s largest industries.  The academy is a collaborative local effort of Miami‐Dade County Public Schools and industry corporations that prepare students to enter the field of hospitality & tourism at the professional level. Students also participate in field trips, listen to expert guest speakers and participate in extracurricular and community service activities in the industry.

For nine years, the Academy of Banking and Finance at Southwest Miami High School has prepared students for successful careers in the financial services industry. Students gain an understanding of the relationship that exists between their education and their potential future earning power. Through industry-trained teachers, internships and industry mentors, students are provided with the curriculum and guidance necessary for rewarding and fulfilling careers.

NAF is an acclaimed national network of high school career academies predominantly based in urban districts-schools within schools-with rigorous, career-themed curricula created with current industry and educational expertise. Each year, NAF serves more than 50,000 students in over 500 Academies in 41 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands through the Academy of Finance, the Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism, and the Academy of Information Technology.
