MIAMI-DADE SCHOOLS POLICE CHIEF NAMED FINALIST FOR
CAMPUS SAFETY DIRECTOR AWARD

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Schools Police Chief Charles Hurley has been named a finalist for 2010 Campus Safety Director of the Year by Campus Safety magazine, which honors the best of the best in the education and healthcare public safety community. Campus Safety magazine will select a top winner at the Campus Safety’s annual conference on March 30-31, 2011 in Long Beach, Calif.

Within six months of his taking over the chief position, Hurley had his department operating in the black for the first time since 1957.  He partnered his officers with local judicial circuit to provide crisis-intervention training to District police officers.  Among his other achievements are the following:

  • Instituted a traffic enforcement strategy that reduced the number of traffic accidents involving student pedestrians by nearly half
  • Had a three-year decrease of crime throughout the District
  • Completely overhauled the Department’s financial operations
  • Reduced incidents and arrests, particularly minority arrests
  • Increased burglary apprehension
  • Instituted Department-wide training on bullying and mental health
  • Obtained a COPS technology grant
  • Created an Aggressive Driving Unit to protect school speed zones and students
