SUPERINTENDENT CARVALHO PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION EVENTS

Miami- Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho participates this week in several national and international education events in New York and Washington.

Carvalho’s first stop was the International Summit on the Teaching Profession, which kicked off at New York’s American Museum of Natural History on March 16 with opening remarks from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.  The summit convened education ministers and union leaders from the world’s twenty top performing countries, as well as education organization leaders and accomplished teachers to identify best practices worldwide that effectively strengthen the teaching profession in ways designed to enhance student achievement. The summit is hosted by the United States Department of Education, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and Education International.

On Friday, March 18, Carvalho will serve on a panel titled “United to Make a Difference: How can education and business work together to meet goals and how can the media help?” as part of USA Today’s inaugural UNITED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE Education Forum in Washington, DC.  The event will be held at the newspaper’s Gannet auditorium and is hosted by the Council of the Great City Schools.

Superintendent Carvalho will participate in the Council of Great City Schools Annual Legislative/Policy Conference March 19-20 at Washington's Mayflower Hotel. In addition to policy and legislative updates, participants will discuss positioning on the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education ACT (No Child Left Behind), the federal budget and appropriations, Race to the Top and School Improvement Grants, and other legislative issues. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, members of Congress and staff are scheduled to join the conference.
