MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS PROMOTES PROM SAFETY MIAMI – In an effort to keep students safe during the upcoming prom season, Miami-Dade County Public Schools has launched a comprehensive prom safety initiative. Miami-Dade Schools Police Department (M-DSPD) in collaboration with the Office of Mental Health and Crisis Management developed and implemented the prom safety initiative. The initiative is comprised of seven components. Public service announcements highlighting the dangers associated with texting, drinking, or using drugs while driving were made by students for their peers. A safety brochure was created to offer ways to enjoy a safe, drug and alcohol-free event. All students purchasing a prom ticket are required to make a student pledge to refrain from drinking alcohol, using drugs or texting while driving. TRUST booths, manned by counselors, will be stationed at each prom to offer guidance. The community is engaged through social networking outlets and websites as well as media outreach. School-based presentations will address prom safety concerns. Schools police in partnership with the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco will conduct sweeps of establishments that may be selling alcoholic beverages or tobacco products to minors. In addition, M-DSPD officers will be onsite during prom activities.
