WHY:

Each year, the judges of Miami's Juvenile Justice Center present the "Wall of Honor" ceremony to recognize those individuals who have made significant contributions to children in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief Charles J. Hurley will be the first police chief inducted into the Wall of Honor

Chief Charles J. Hurley has made significant contributions to the following: • Assisted in creating the Civil Citation Diversity Program, where youth are  diverted from the Juvenile Justice System
• Reduced youth arrests throughout the District by more than 35 percent primarily for minority youth
• Conducted county-wide Truancy Sweeps, reconnecting youth to academics, including increasing high school graduation
• Integrated Mental Health and Social Work into the police department to better access youth with exceptionalities
• Created the Department’s Aggressive Driving Unit (ADU) to protect children from Safety School Zones and reduce traffic accidents involving children
• Assisted with reviving the Gang Strike Force to reduce gang and violent crime  throughout the county
• Reduced crime incidents and juvenile arrests, in the past three consecutive years
