SHENANDOAH MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSEUMS MAGNET PROGRAM RECOGNIZED IN NATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION MIAMI – Shenandoah Middle School Museums Magnet Program was recently named the second-place winner of the prestigious Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum community design competition. The competition, a partnership with the Ford Motor Co. Fund, challenges students to find a design solution to a community issue or concern. It is open to students from Miami, Chicago, San Antonio and San Diego, whose teachers attended the Cooper-Hewitt’s A City of Neighborhoods and Smithsonian Design Institute professional development programs. Four eighth-grade students from Shenandoah Middle School Museums Magnet Program designed a Pet Waste Station to address the issue of dog waste next to their school’s sidewalks. Their project included educating the neighbors of the harmful effects of dog waste as well as distributing brochures, installing disposal bins and signage. The students won $3,000 for their idea. The Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum is the only American museum dedicated to historic and contemporary design. Cooper-Hewitt’s Professional Development Programs teach educators the design process while emphasizing critical thinking, visual literacy, problem solving, and teamwork. # # # 11-JJS/104/DF |
