MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SCHOOLS POLICE CHIEF JOINS On Tuesday, June 21, 2011, organizations and individuals around the country will celebrate National ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Day. Each year, ASK Day takes place on the first day of summer, a time of year when children play more often in other homes. ASK Day reminds parents about the importance of asking if there are guns in the homes where their children play. Chief Charles J. Hurley, Miami‐Dade Schools Police Department, is joining this campaign because he is passionate about spreading the word on gun safety to the students, parents, and Miami‐Dade County community. “While teaching children is normally done from school bell to school bell, protecting our youth never stops,” said Chief Hurley. “There are a number of dangers that children encounter during the summer when they visit other homes and residences; we need to be aware of those risks to protect them.” Children might spend time with friends and get involved in situations that we can teach them to avoid. The ASK Campaign helps us to understand those threats and offer options to care for our kids. Aside from guns and weapons, there are hazards that children can be exposed to: medicine cabinets with prescription drugs; pools without safety nets (fences) or adult supervision; distracted drivers which endanger them while bicycling, skating, or walking, and many others. Parents can get involved by using one simple strategy—ASKING. “Asking Saves Kids” Campaign encourages parents to ask other parents questions, as well as their children to help keep children safe.
