INVESTIGATION BY MIAMI-DADE SCHOOLS POLICE DEPARTMENT LEADS TO ARREST OF CLINIC OWNER AND DISTRICT EMPLOYEE

A strategic multi-agency investigation, spearheaded by the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, resulted in the execution of a search warrant at a local medical clinic and the arrest of the clinic’s owner. The owner was arrested on multiple counts of patient brokering.

“The greatest insult to students, teachers and taxpayers is individuals who prey on our employees and siphon funds away from our school district,” said Alberto M. Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.  “That is why we conducted the investigation that resulted in these arrests.”

The District, which operates a self-insured healthcare plan for its employees, was defrauded by the clinic. This comes at a time when the District is navigating through a budget crisis and cuts to public education. At least two District employees were also charged by police. Additional arrests are expected as the investigation expands.

If you have questions, please contact Chief Charles Hurley, Chief of Police and District Security, Miami-Dade Schools Police Department at 305-757-7708.
