STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVES WAIVERS FOR MIAMI EDISON AND MIAMI CENTRAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS, HOLMES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The Florida Board of Education approved waivers for Miami Edison and Miami Central senior high schools and Holmes Elementary School at its meeting in Tampa this morning, permitting the schools to continue to progress academically as traditional public schools under the direction of the Miami-Dade school district. “The Board has made a very wise decision in recognizing the progress that has been made in these schools and allowing them the opportunity to continue their success,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “This is a huge victory for our community.” Last week, the schools were threatened with closure, conversion to charter schools, or takeover by private management firms, according to state statute, because they were unable to exit “Intervene” status. Federal and state officials, as well as community members, weighed in on the issue, and the Interim Commissioner of Education made a modified recommendation to keep the schools open. The Board also collectively agreed that the process for schools to exit “Intervene” status needs to be altered. Holmes Elementary has sustained a “C” for three consecutive years. Miami Edison and Miami Central senior high schools both moved from “F” to “C” this year. # # # 11-JS/127 |
