MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECEIVES $100,000 FEDERAL HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION GRANT

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools was awarded a one-year, $100,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration for funding under the Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Education Program.  The purpose of this program is to improve the preparation of students, particularly women and minorities, in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through curriculum development and other activities related to transportation. The grant is named after Garrett A. Morgan, an African American inventor and entrepreneur.

The project, “Innovations in Transportation Education Engineering,” will be implemented at Booker T. Washington’s Senior High School’s Academy of Engineering program.  Students will be provided with opportunities, from career readiness and hands-on experience to college preparatory-level classes, labs, and creative exercises.  Students will be introduced to a world-class engineering curriculum developed by Project Lead the Way, Inc. whose content is based on expertise from engineering and manufacturing industry leaders and education experts.  The coursework will include specific technology skills related to the construction of the Port of Miami Tunnel project, and other transportation-related activities, which include extended classroom experiences at the Port of Miami, internships and mentoring by engineers currently employed by the various companies constructing the tunnel.

Mr. Christopher Hodgkins, Vice President of MAT Concessionaire LLC commented, “We are pleased to partner with the Academy of Engineering program at Booker T. Washington Senior High School to facilitate the interest of high school students in the field of transportation engineering and, ultimately, will supply the skilled employees needed for the transportation workforce.”

The Academy of Engineering at Booker T. Washington is a newly-established magnet program that is in its planning year with the National Academy Foundation. Interested students who reside outside the school’s attendance boundary can still apply by contacting the Academy of Engineering Lead Teacher, Mr. Paul Lasseur, at 305-324-8900.  For additional information regarding the project, please contact the School Choice & Parental Options Office at 305-995-1922 or Dr. Lupe Diaz at 305-995-2636.
