MIAMI-DADE STUDENTS TAKE TOP HONORS AT NATIONAL NAACP ACT-SO
ACADEMIC COMPETITION

MIAMI – Ashlee-Ann Ramsey of Coral Reef Senior High School won the gold medal in dance at the NAACP’s 33rd Annual National Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) competition this past summer. She received a laptop and a $2,000 cash prize for her achievement.

Candice Dawson of Coral Reef Senior High School earned a bronze medal in vocal classical while James Jackson of Miami Jackson Senior High School received the bronze medal in architecture during the competition.  Each bronze medalist received a laptop and a $1,500 cash prize. Twenty additional M-DCPS students qualified for the national ACT-SO competition.

The award-winning students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools had an opportunity to showcase their talents at the Miami-Dade NAACP Annual Freedom Fund Celebration on September 10th.

ACT-SO brings talented African American youths from across the country together to compete in 26 categories within the sciences, humanities, performing arts, visual arts and business. Known as an “Olympics of the Mind,” ACT-SO presents gold, silver and bronze medals to first, second and third place winners in their categories. The awards program takes place each year at the site of the NAACP National Convention.
