M·DCPS STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL FITNESS CHALLENGE
Miami-Dade public school students will participate in the second annual Million Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) Challenge. The challenge was created last year to help one million Americans adopt a more active and healthy lifestyle.
The PALA challenge was such a success that more than 1.7 million people participated. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has the distinction of being one of eight organizations that helped more than 100,000 people become active in the past year through the challenge.
PALA encourages children and adults to devote 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day for five days a week during six of the eight weeks of the challenge. Participants are also asked to choose one nutritional goal a week out of eight options. After completion of the challenge, participants receive a certificate.
First lady Michelle Obama launched her Let’s Move! salad bar initiative last year at Riverside Elementary School. The initiative places salad bars in 6,000 schools across the nation. The First Lady discussed healthy eating choices with the students and was joined by local celebrity chefs and district Chef Partners Kris Wessel, Michelle Bernstein, Michael Schwartz, Frank Jeannetti and Ken Lyon.
