MIAMI-DADE’S SCHOOLS TO CELEBRATE DIGITAL LEARNING DAY, FEB. 1

MIAMI – Miami-Dade’s public schools will celebrate Digital Learning Day (DLD) on Wednesday in support of the District’s continued efforts to provide digital learning opportunities and innovative teaching.

“Everyday in Miami-Dade is Digital Learning Day,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “We are erasing the digital deserts in our community through innovative technology instruction and through outreach efforts such as our e-Rate campaign to raise funds to strengthen technology in schools and classrooms. In Miami-Dade, we’re creating an environment where learning happens anytime, anywhere.”

DLD is the culminating event in a year-round national awareness campaign to improve teaching and learning for all children. Hundreds of school districts, thousands of teachers, and more than a million students nationwide will encourage the innovative use of technology by trying something new, showcasing success, kicking off project-based learning, or focusing on how digital tools can help improve student outcomes.

Schools, teachers, and students in Miami-Dade are supporting the national campaign by participating in a host of activities which include the following:

  • Participate in the virtual National Town Hall meeting
  • Conduct a school wide online scavenger hunt
  • Create digital student projects and presentations
  • Present digital story time activities
  • Create digital stories using animation software
  • Go on virtual field trips
  • Incorporate eBooks and digital resources in lessons
  • Incorporate interactive technology and digital resources in lessons across all content areas
  • Create student produced video project

The E-rate Funding Campaign “Bringing Wireless to the Classroom” was launched in order to connect all schools via Wi-Fi by the 2012-2013 school year. Funds raised will be matched by federal dollars at a rate of $100 for every $10 raised locally, yielding up to $70 million. The campaign ends March 20, 2012.
