21 MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC MAGNET SCHOOLS RECEIVE NATIONAL RECOGNITION FROM MAGNET SCHOOLS OF AMERICA
Magnet Schools of America (MSA), a national organization representing magnet schools and programs, has recognized 21 public magnet schools in Miami-Dade County for their commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation/diversity efforts, specialized teaching staffs, and parent community involvement. No other school district has ever received this number of awards within a single school year.
Magnet Schools of Excellence Awards, given to select schools that score the highest marks nation-wide, and Magnet Schools of Distinction Awards recognize the top magnet schools and programs in the United States that consistently deliver quality services to all school stakeholders.
Miami-Dade County’s award-winning public magnet schools are as follows:

Magnet Schools of America also recognizes top magnet school principals regionally and nationally. Dr. Stacey H. Mancuso, Principal of Design and Architecture Senior High, was selected from an applicant pool of magnet school principals from Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Alabama as the Region IV MSA Principal of the Year. Dr. Mancuso advances as a finalist for the coveted national MSA Principal of the Year Award.
Additionally, Sunset Elementary School is one of four finalists for the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, the highest ranking award given to only one magnet school nation-wide. This school will be visited by a team of educators in the coming weeks.
Awards will be announced at the 30th National Conference on Magnet Schools being held in Dallas, Texas from May 18 – 21, 2012.
About Magnet School Programs in Miami-Dade County Public Schools
Magnet school programs offer unique courses of study focusing on students’ special interests, talents, and abilities and are available in six themes of study: Careers & Professions; International Education; Liberal Arts; Mathematics, Science, & Technology; iPrep; and Visual & Performing Arts. Since opening its first magnet program in 1973, magnet and choice options have greatly expanded within Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Currently, over 43,000 students are enrolled in 360 magnet programs offered at 103 schools district-wide.
