FOUR MIAMI-DADE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS RE-ELECTED UNOPPOSED MIAMI – Four Miami-Dade School Board members have been re-elected without opposition. This is the largest number of incumbents to be re-elected unopposed in many years. The incumbents re-elected without opposition for four-year terms are: Dr. Wilbert “Tee” Holloway, District 1(first appointed in 2007); Dr. Martin Karp, District 3 (first elected in 2004); Carlos Curbelo, District 7 (first elected in 2010); and Dr. Lawrence S. Feldman, District 9 (first elected in 2008). The results are indicative of the School Board’s commitment to listening to the needs of the community, its dedication to music, arts and foreign languages, as well as its reluctance to raise taxes. “Today’s results are reflective of the public’s satisfaction with the direction of education in Miami-Dade’s public schools,” said School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho added, "The re-election of every incumbent is a testament to the accomplishments of a unified board that will serve the community well during times of still uncertain economic conditions and dramatically increased accountability requirements." According to the Elections Department of Miami-Dade County, filing ended to run for a seat on the Miami-Dade County School Board at noon today. There were a total of five seats up for election out of the nine-member school board. The remaining seat in District 5 was left open due to the departure of School Board Member Renier Díaz de la Portilla, who is currently seeking a seat in the Florida House of Representatives. The vacancy will be filled in the upcoming primary election held in August. The winner of that contest along with the four remaining members re-elected this year without opposition will be sworn into office in late November. # # # 012-JJS/411/TC |
