M-DCPS CELEBRATES WORLD REFUGEE DAY

Miami Senior Adult Principal Alan Bashaw (holding microphone) helps a student, Luis De La Cruz, from a refugee program during an event honoring World Refugee Day 2012.

World Refugee Day is celebrated every June 20 to highlight the plight, challenges and struggles of individuals forced to abandon their countries due to political, religious or racial persecution.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ refugee program - Skills for Academic, Vocational and English Studies (S.A.V.E.S.) - serves approximately 12,000 students a year with free classes, books, babysitting services, translation of degrees, and transportation to assist them to resettle in the U.S.

For additional information about S.A.V.E.S., visit http://saves.dadeschools.net or call 305-548-3493.
