FIU TRUSTEES HONOR SCHOOL BOARD CHAIR PERLA TABARES HANTMAN AND SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO M. CARVALHO

The Florida International University (FIU) Board of Trustees honored Miami-Dade County School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman and Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho for their continued commitment to excellence in education at a ceremony held at the university Nov. 29.

The Board of Trustees extended the honor in appreciation of Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) recent win of the 2012 Broad Prize for Urban Education, an annual award that honors urban school districts across the country that are making the greatest progress in raising student achievement.  This is the fifth time that M-DCPS had been recognized as a finalist. The District was also a finalist in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011.

FIU and M-DCPS have joined in a partnership called ACCESS, or Achieving Community Collaboration in Education and Student Success.  ACCESS encompasses programs focused on minority education, teacher training, tutoring, academic leadership development and college readiness, which have contributed toward the Broad Prize victory.

Under the leadership of President Mark Rosenberg, FIU was extremely supportive of M-DCPS’ recent successful School Bond Referendum, which will generate $1.2 billion for school renovation, construction and technology improvements.
