M-DCPS RECEIVES $3,000 FOR STEM ACADEMY STUDENTS

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Advisory Board was awarded a $3,000 check at ITPalooza, an all-day event hosted at the NOVA Southeastern Graduate School. Sponsored by SherlockTech Staffing, the event was attended by more than 60 user groups, 47 industry sponsors and 100 prominent industry presenters.

According to a survey of 500 Information Technology (IT) professionals and local companies conducted by SherlockTech Staffing in conjunction with ITPalooza, IT hiring is showing strong signs of turnaround in South Florida. Fifty-seven percent of responding local companies indicate that they plan to hire additional IT staff in 2013 compared to 20 percent in 2011. Leaders showed a real interest in participating in the National Academy Foundation (NAF) Internship programs, which allow students to apply technical and interpersonal skills learned in an academy classroom.

STEM students in the Academy of Engineering, Academy of Information Technology and the Academy of Heath Sciences are provided with opportunities from career readiness and hands-on experience to college preparatory-level classes, labs, and creative exercises. The 22 STEM academies are member programs of the NAF, a national network of career academies, under the auspices of the School Choice & Parental Options office.

For additional information regarding the Academies and the internship program, please contact the School Choice & Parental Options Office at 305-995-1922.
