MIAMI CENTRAL CAREER ACADEMY RECEIVES NATIONAL STATUS Miami Central Senior High School’s Academy of Information Technology will now join 13 other career academies in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) as a nationally recognized career academy. These academies earn this coveted distinction by undergoing an assessment process that includes intense preparation and a visiting site team review. A nationally recognized career academy follows the 10 National Standards of Practice introduced by a consortium of career academy organizations and endorsed by the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor. Data reflect that students enrolled in career academies have better attendance, higher graduation rates, and fewer discipline problems. M-DCPS has 14 career academy programs that hold national status as model programs. Students enrolled in career academy programs earn industry level certifications that give them an edge in the career and college application process; participate in summer internships; network with business and community leaders; involve themselves in community service projects; and are eligible for dual enrollment courses and college scholarships. Each career academy receiving national distinction is honored at a national conference. Miami Central will be formally recognized next fall in Arizona and receive its banner and monetary award to enhance its program. Organizations such as the National Career Academy Coalition (NCAC) and the National Academy Foundation (NAF) are both recognized leaders for collaborative support and sustainability of career-themed programs, dedicated to creating and supporting a national network of existing and emerging academies focusing on college and career readiness. For more information, contact the Academy Lead Teacher at each respective school or call the School Choice & Parental Options Office at 305-995-1922.
