SUPERINTENDENT CARVALHO TO BE HONORED BY MEXICAN GOVERNMENT The Mexican Government has just announced that Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho will receive The Ohtli Award, the highest honor for any civilian living outside of Mexico, who has devoted part of his/her life and professional activities to “forging a new path” abroad for others. The award will be presented at the national conference of the National Association for Bilingual Education being held February 7-9, 2013, at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. “It is a great honor to be recognized for the Ohtli Award” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “Having come to this country as an immigrant, I know there are challenges as well as opportunities, and I choose to support those who come here to search for a better life, which serves to improve our community and make our nation stronger.” The Ohtli award celebrates and acknowledges the value of the altruistic activities the person engages in on a constant basis, to promote the well-being of fellow men. The award is given to those individuals that have dedicated great part of their lives and professional activity to seek out prosperity for Mexican communities abroad and to open avenues to benefit the quality of life of the immigrant population. The prize consists of a medallion, a silver rosette, and a diploma signed by the president of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME), an institution that seeks to strengthen Mexico’s relations with its diaspora through countless unity-promoting projects. The former Ambassador to the United Nations Bill Richardson and Phil Gordon, Mayor of Phoenix, are among the notables to receive this award.
