MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS BEGINS THE YEAR WITH HONORS Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) students, teachers, schools and programs started 2013 with an impressive array of honors and achievements. Among the accomplishments: The Beacon Council Judges’ Special Award: The School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida and Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho are the recipients of this year’s award for their vision and leadership. Mexican Government Ohtli Award: The Mexican Government honored Superintendent Carvalho with The Ohtli Award, the highest honor for any civilian living outside of Mexico, who has devoted part of his/her life and professional activities to “forging a new path” abroad for others. The award was presented at the national conference of the National Association for Bilingual Education held on February 7. Ronald H. Brown Award: Superintendent Carvalho received The Ronald H. Brown Award during 27th Annual Lewis Hine Awards for Service to Children and Youth. Carvalho was recognized for his remarkable work in the school district, where he is creating equal access to high-quality education, spearheading the migration from textbooks to digital content, and developing cutting-edge educational environments to meet the demands of today’s students. Miami Life Award as Best Public Servant: The 2013 Best Public Servant Miami Life Award was given to Superintendent Carvalho for his extraordinary love and concern for our Miami-Dade community as the educational leader for the fourth largest public school district in the United States. Veteran Educator Named Top Principal: Dr. Rosann P. Sidener, principal of Miami Beach Senior High School was selected as the 2012 Florida Association of School Administrators' (FASA) Principal of the Year. Sidener is a 34-year veteran educator and administrator with M-DCPS. M-DCPS Principal and Assistant Principals are finalists for state award: Dr. Pablo Ortiz and Denise Barrett-Johnson from our school district are finalists the Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership and Outstanding Assistant Principal Achievement Award. The event will be held at Lake Buena Vista on February 11. M-DCPS Educator Named Finalist for U.S. Teacher of the Year: Alexandre Lopes, a Pre-K, Special Education teacher at Carol City Elementary School was named one of four finalists vying for the 2014 United States Teacher of the Year Award. The winner will be announced at a White House ceremony during National Recognition Week April 21-26, 2013, in Washington, D.C. # # # 012-JJS/020/GC |
