SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS ALBERTO M. CARVALHO WILL BE KEYNOTE
SPEAKER AT 2013 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR BILINGUAL EDUCATION (NABE) CONFERENCE, FEB. 7
MIAMI - Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho has been selected as the keynote speaker for the 2013 National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) Conference, which will take place at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. With the theme “Bilingual Education: A World of Possibilities and Experiences Await You! Magic happens!!,” Carvalho will be opening the convention on Thursday, February 7 at 10:15 a.m.
“Bilingual educators truly make magic happen, opening doors for children and adults,” said Carvalho. “It is a moral imperative for us to create opportunities for bilingual learners and offer them opportunities to be true citizens of the world.”
Carvalho was chosen for this honor because of his advocacy for high-quality education, starting in the classroom as a science teacher, and through his outstanding leadership as superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools - the fourth largest school system in the nation. Under Carvalho’s direction, Miami-Dade achieved its most impressive high school graduation rate ever and saw students consistently outperforming their national peers on the 2009 National Assessment for Educational Progress. Recently, Miami-Dade County Public Schools received the Broad Prize for Urban Education, an annual award that honors urban school districts across the country that are making the greatest progress in raising student achievement. In Miami-Dade school district, 91 percent of children come from minority families, more than 50 percent of families are foreign born and about 75 percent speak a language other than English at home.
The National Association for Bilingual Education is the only national professional organization devoted to representing Bilingual Learners and Bilingual Education professionals. NABE has affiliates in 20 states which collectively represent more members that include Bilingual and English Language Learner (ELL) teachers, parents, paraprofessionals, administrators, professors, advocates, researchers, and policy makers. NABE's mission is to advocate for our nation's Bilingual and English Language Learners and families and to cultivate a multilingual multicultural society by supporting and promoting policy, programs, pedagogy, research, and professional development that yield academic success, value native language, lead to English proficiency, and respect cultural and linguistic diversity.
