MIAMI-DADE’S ALEXIS LEHRMAN SELECTED AS A RECIPIENT OF OUTSTANDING YOUTH VOLUNTEER NATIONAL AWARDS PROGRAM

Miami – Alexis Lehrman, 14, a student at Design and Architecture Senior High School, was named as one of 102 student volunteers State Honorees (two per state and the District of Columbia) by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program. The nationwide 18 year-old program honors young people for exemplary acts of volunteerism and is underwritten by Prudential Financial, Inc. in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Alexis, a freshman at Design and Architecture Senior High, has raised more than $50,000 over the past five years for the fight against breast cancer by recruiting friends and professional artists to help her create paintings that are turned into posters and sold at Susan G. Komen for the Cure events.

Each of the 102 State Honorees will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense–paid trip to Washington, D.C. in early May to attend four days of national recognition events culminating with the selection of ten students as America’s top youth volunteers for 2013.

Many of this year’s State Honorees were recognized for their work on behalf of bullying prevention, raising monies for cancer research, and for providing more activities accessible to people with disabilities.
