M-DCPS ADMINISTRATORS NAMED TOP PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL IN FLORIDA Two Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ administrators won top honors for their superior leadership skills during the eighth-annual Commissioner's Summit for Principals. Dr. Pablo Ortiz, former principal of Miami Edison Senior High, was named the Florida Outstanding Principal of the Year and Denise Barrett-Johnson, assistant principal at Lake Stevens Middle School was named Florida Outstanding Assistant Principal of the Year. “Having these two fine professionals achieve top statewide recognition for their service to our youth is an unprecedented honor for Miami-Dade County Public Schools,” said Alberto M. Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. “They join Alex Lopes who is a finalist for National Teacher of the Year and Dr. Kevin Williams, recipient of $25,000 Milken Award, as exemplary leaders in school reform. Today marks yet another accomplishment in the impressive array of honors and achievements, including the Broad Prize and improved graduation rates for our high school seniors, which have been bestowed on our district this year.” Commissioner of Education Tony Bennett presented Dr. Ortiz with a $5,000 check and an additional $1,000 for his school. Barrett-Johnson was presented with a check for $2,500 and $575 for her school. Superintendent Carvalho attended the event that brings together some of Florida’s finest school administrators to celebrate the accomplishments of colleagues and to support the work of the countless school leaders throughout our state. # # # 13-JS/029/GC |
