ACADEMY OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM STUDENTS WIN GOLD AT STATE COMPETITION

Two Hospitality teams from Miami Beach Senior High School and Miami Sunset Senior High School won “gold” at the state championship sponsored by the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association.

During the two-day state championship held at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando, student teams used their verbal, writing, and technical skills to create a themed event utilizing expertise in budgeting, marketing and menu planning.  The Hospitality Knowledge Bowl is a game show style question and answer event that tested student knowledge in hotel management.  The Miami Beach team won first place and Miami Sunset won third in the Hospitality Project event.  Miami Beach Senior High School was also awarded second place in the Knowledge Bowl category.  Each member of the team was awarded a $750 scholarship to Johnson & Wales University.

The students were coached for this competition by mentors from the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, Bentley Hilton and, Intercontinental Doral hotels, as well as Dr. Lupe Diaz, Karl Laxy and Vanessa Fernandez.
