MIAMI SUNSET SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS PROMOTE BENEFITS OF FINANCIAL LITERACY Miami Sunset Senior High School’s Academy of Finance (AOF) students presented financial literacy tips at School Board Member Dr. Marta Pérez’s District 8 Town Hall Meeting. AOF students addressed several topics from banking to student loans, which served as important reminders for everyone in attendance. Miami Sunset opened a branch of the South Florida Educational Credit Union (Excalibur Financial) that is managed by AOF students. These students are trained to provide their fellow students with information on the importance of saving for the future and effective money management strategies. Sunset’s Academy of Finance is a member of the National Academy Foundation (NAF). NAF academies function as dynamic partnerships and collaborations between schools, teachers, administrators, business volunteers, and an active Advisory Board led by industry professionals. NAF Academy students complement their core academic studies with a focus on one of the following career themes: Finance, Hospitality & Tourism, Information Technology, Engineering and Health Sciences. Sunset’s Finance program is a Gold Seal and national award-winning Future Business Leaders of America Chapter (FBLA). A study conducted by the Association for Career and Technical Education showed that students who participate in FBLA outperform their peers in GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and graduation rates. NAF also reports that students graduate at a far higher rate if they are a member of a NAF academy.
