SUPERINTENDENT CARVALHO, MAYOR GIMENEZ MEET WITH LOCAL LEADERS TO REVIEW ACTION STEPS TO KEEP CHILDREN SAFE FROM VIOLENCE
Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez met with mayors, police chiefs and other local leaders today to review action steps to keep children safe from violence. The second joint roundtable discussion on Youth Safety with local officials took place at Miami Senior High School.
Among the points presented:
- Increase police presence and visibility in schools;
- Implement a countywide school critical incident response plan;
- Research and develop a smart device reporting application;
- Increase police presence at and near county and municipal parks during early-release school days;
- Enhance public awareness of existing crime prevention programs;
- Increase families' access to school-based behavioral and mental health services;
- Identify and enhance employment programs including summer job opportunities with track records of success;
- Promote youth empowerment summits;
- Open communication channels between youths and law enforcement agencies;
- Implement a long-term awareness campaign to empower stakeholders in promoting youth safety; and
- Submit a community application for COPS funding to enhance safety and security around schools.
At the conclusion of the meeting, local leaders signed a commitment pledge to implement the roundtable’s recommendations, aligning resources in support of youth safety. Community engagement will continue to be emphasized, because the responsibility for the children's safety belongs to everyone.
