LEEWOOD K-8 CENTER IS ONE OF FIVE GRAND PRIZE WINNERS Public schools from California, Florida, Minnesota, New Mexico, and New York will each receive over $100,000 in technology at a celebration in Washington, D.C., on April 17. Miami-Dade’s Leewood K-8 Center – the only school in Florida among the 15 finalists – has been named one of the five Grand Prize winners of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest! The competition was created to raise enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education among U.S. public school students. Each of the five winning schools will receive more than $100,000 in technology products such as smart boards, LED TVs, and laptops. Leewood, chosen as a finalist in February, already was awarded $40,000 in technology from Samsung, Adobe Foundation, and DIRECTV. Their project is titled, “Today’s Kids Improving the Environment for a Healthier Tomorrow - Caring for the Soil, Water and Eco-system Now!” The grand champions were chosen by several methods. A panel of Samsung judges chose three of the champions, including Leewood. An online community vote and a Samsung employee poll were used to chose two winners. The other grand champions are Franklin High School, Los Angeles; Forestview Middle School, Baxter, Minn.; Arrowhead Park Early College, Las Cruces, N.M.; and MS 88/Peter Rouget Middle School, Brooklyn, N.Y. All the winners will be honored in a special Washington, D.C. ceremony on April 17.
